#1: WINNIE THE POOH: A VERY MERRY POOH YEAR (2002)
A tale about friendship, remembering what is most important during the festive season and sticking to your resolutions. It’s simple yet heart-warming and sweet, with plenty of great one-liners from your favourite silly old bear. If that ending where the Hundred Acre Wood crew sings “Auld Lang Syne” doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.
#2: A CHRISTMAS CAROL (2009)
No Christmas is complete without Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Not only does this retelling by Disney have Jim Carrey voicing the parts of Ebenerzer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come, he also physically plays the parts through motion capture. Pretty cool, eh?
#3: THE SANTA CLAUSE (1994)
What happens when you accidentally cause Santa to fall from the roof and end up having to take his place as the next Santa Claus? A sudden craving for cookies and milk, overnight weight gain, the ability to tell if a kid is naughty or nice – and the seemingly impossible task of having to convince everyone that you’re really Santa. Welcome to Scott Calvin’s life.
#4: THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL (1992)
For those of us who grew up with The Muppets, The Muppet Christmas Carol is charged with nostalgia. Dickens’ Christmas tale is joined by musical numbers sung by Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the rest of the Muppet crew, adding a comedic, heart-warming and frankly, quite adorable edge to this reimagining of a classic. A stirring performance by the incomparable Michael Caine tops it all off.
#5: THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993)
This made our Halloween must-watch list, so it’s no question that it’ll make this list! A little tired of having to plan Halloween year after year, Jack Skellington finds a new purpose upon stumbling into Christmas Town. From there, he conceives the ingenious idea of combining Halloween and Christmas. Of course, he’ll have to get Santa Claus – or rather, Sandy Claws – out of the way first. You don’t need us to tell you that Skellington’s new holiday has “DISASTER” written all over it.
#6: MICKEY’S ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS (1999)
This goes out to all the nineties kids out there. Comprising three parts, this anthology movie sees Christmas and all the chaos it brings through the eyes of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy and the whole gang. Expect special appearances by Chip ‘n’ Dale, Figaro and Mortimer Mouse.
#7: FROZEN (2013)
What’s Christmas without a little frost? With the Academy Award-winning Frozen, you can expect a lot of frost. No longer held back by fear – cue “Let It Go” – Queen Elsa of Arendelle embraces her icy powers, but unknowingly plunges her kingdom into a bitingly cold winter. It is then up to her sister Princess Anna to bring summer back to Arendelle. Family drama during Christmas? We can relate. Don’t forget to grab yourself a cup of Elsa’s Hot Cocoa!
